Common Tractor Problems and Solutions
A major malfunction can seriously disrupt your operations, so if something goes wrong with your tractor, you’ll want to get it fixed as soon as possible. Of course, fixing the problem is next to impossible if you can’t identify its source. That is why Tractor Bobs has created this basic tractor maintenance troubleshooting guide. Follow along to help diagnose your tractor’s maintenance issue.
Dull Blades
If you are noticing a drop in performance, take a look at your tractor’s attachments. Blades dull over time, forcing you to put more energy into accomplishing the same task. We recommended you sharpen the blades twice a year, or three times a year if the attachment sees a lot of heavy use.
Smaller models will have a single-blade mowing deck. These are easy to remove and can be sharpened with a file. Larger models can be too difficult to remove on your own, meaning that you’ll have to schedule a service appointment to remove the blade for sharpening.
Fuel System
If you notice a slow deterioration in performance, an issue with the fuel system is often to blame. Low fuel pressure is one common problem, as is a jammed fuel control lever. If the lever becomes jammed, spraying lubricant is sometimes all that you need to do. However, in most cases, you will have to schedule a service appointment to get it unstuck.
Electrical Issues
Of all the possible electrical issues that can befall your tractor, many can be traced back to the battery not being properly charged. Too much time spent idle can drain the battery, though sometimes all that is needed is a recharge. Inspect the posts and cables for wear or material deposits from time to time. Both can negatively affect performance, so do any necessary cleaning or repairs. If you have done all of this and are still experiencing issues, take your tractor to an expert.
Engine
There are many things that can go wrong with an engine, but one of the most common is a spark plug that stops working correctly. If you are experiencing hard starts, low fuel consumption, and low performance, check the spark plug. Check your owner’s manual to find out how often you should replace your spark plugs to keep things functioning properly.
A clogged carburetor is another common issue. Carburetors blend air and fuel for the engine, so a blockage can be hugely detrimental to performance. Luckily, you can fix this problem on your own if you catch it soon enough. However, if the carburetor has been clogged for too long, you will have to contact a service center.
